What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. The lens, which is normally clear, helps focus light onto the retina so you can see sharp images. When a cataract forms, the lens becomes cloudy, causing vision to appear blurry, dim, or less colorful.
Cataracts are a natural part of aging, and nearly everyone will develop them at some point in their life. Other causes of cataracts include trauma, medications like steroids, and retinal surgery. While cataracts are common, they are also treatable. Cataract surgery is a safe and modern procedure in which the cloudy lens is gently removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). Most patients experience improved vision and return to everyday activities soon after surgery.
Symptoms of Cataracts include but are not limited to:
- Blurry or cloudy vision
- Increased sensitivity to light or glare
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Colors appear faded or yellowed
- Frequent changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions
Things to Know Before Cataract Surgery
- Cataract surgery is very common and safe
It is one of the most frequently performed surgeries in the world, with a high success rate and excellent outcomes for most patients. - The procedure is quick and comfortable
Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that usually takes less than 15 minutes per eye, although you will be at the surgery center for approximately 2 hours. You’ll receive medication to help you relax, but you will remain awake during the surgery. Your eye will be numb, and most patients experience little to no discomfort. - Vision usually improves quickly
Most people notice clearer vision within a few days, with continued improvement as the eye heals. - You’ll choose a lens that fits your lifestyle
Before surgery, your doctor will help you choose the intraocular lens (IOL) that best fits your vision goals, such as reducing your dependence on glasses. We offer several IOL options to meet different needs, including monofocal, toric, Eyhance, Symfony, and Odyssey lenses. We will explain each option to you and help you decide which lens is right for you. - Recovery is generally easy
Most patients return to normal activities within a day or two. In most cases you will not need to use any prescription drops after surgery. - Surgery is done one eye at a time
If both eyes need surgery, they are treated on separate days to allow each eye to heal properly. - Our team will guide you every step of the way
From pre-operative testing to post-surgery checkups, our staff will answer questions and make sure you feel comfortable and informed.
